Corinne's hands settled on the rake handle before her thoughts caught up, the grip familiar as the morning glare bouncing off the salt pan. She dragged the wooden teeth across yesterday’s crust, hearing the brittle layer crack like thin ice on a trough. Windless air let the brine lie flat, turning the basin into a mirror that copied her bent silhouette in shimmering white. Beside the sluice, Linden uncapped a small tin flask of water and splashed his neck, the sound sharp against the wide quiet. Neither spoke yet; rhythm alone governed those first strokes, each ridge rising neatly, small crystalline fences toward the low wall.
Work soon drew its own clutter. The rake leaned against a bucket, a brass gadget for testing salinity balanced on the edge, and a battered broomstick waited for sweeping stray crystals from the channel. A four-legged companion—old mutt with pale fur powdered by salt—trotted circles around the equipment, stopping whenever a lizard skipped between tiles of crust. Corinne measured, poured, raked, and measured again, piling detail upon detail as though the pan desired decoration rather than harvest. Inquisitiveness hovered in the afternoon light; each ripple sparkled under it, and she bent closer till her brim brushed the glare off the water.
Midway through the pass, Corinne paused; the rake’s teeth snagged unexpectedly, not on thick crust but on nothing at all, a gap where a ridge should glint. The familiar low chime of brine trickling through the sluice stayed silent, its absence sliding into her awareness like shade. She set the rake aside, straightened, and counted the ridges; one too many crowded the pool, damming the flow needed for even drying. Their slow odyssey toward solidity had stalled beneath that excess, coarse crystals growing dull under the stalled water. She scooped the extra ridge with both hands, crystals clicking against her palms, and tipped the mound back into the channel until a flat shimmer replaced it.
Water resumed its thin murmur, and the remaining ridges settled into clear order, space opening between them like chalk lines freshly drawn. Linden raised an eyebrow yet spoke no verdict, while the four-legged companion flopped beside the wall, a dry crackle answering each shift of its paws. They raked in slower, longer strokes, letting patience gather where overwork had scattered clarity. Far overhead, a gull traced a slow spiral, its shadow crossing ridge after ridge and briefly darkening the mirror-bright surface. Late sunlight sharpened the white. Corinne slipped off a canvas glove and hung it on the broomstick’s splintered end; salt stains stiffened the fabric into a pale husk that swung in the breeze.
Translation
