Perched on the towpath wall, Maddox watched Merritt brace both boots against the balance beam while the boat drifted beneath the granite lock walls. The midday sun pressed down with benevolent steadiness, throwing a clear outline of the gate across the water's dark surface. A low groan rolled along the chamber as timber rubbed metal, then settled into silence broken only by the engine's slow pulse. Maddox noted the waterline moss, the narrow clearance overhead, and the gate’s oak spine thicker than his arm. Each detail stacked quietly, like numbered rungs on an unseen ladder he climbed in thought.
As the sluice paddles cracked open, water rushed southward through hidden channels, and the boat eased forward the width of a single step. The deck tilted by degrees barely visible, yet the rope between bollard and cleat tightened, fibres shimmering where sunlight skipped along them. Merritt tapped the cabin roof, a wordless marker that the rise had begun, then rested elbows on the beam, studying the widening gap. “Still rising,” he murmured. Maddox’s first deduction came from the asymmetry: the starboard gate drifted, while the port remained stubbornly close to the wall. He hopped onto the stone ledge, squinted down the hollow space, and caught sight of a sliver of driftwood wedged against the hinge.
He gripped the beam, pushed once, felt resistance, then let his eyes slip shut; the chamber’s voice, not its shape, would decide the moment. Without sight, the lock sounded different: faint trickles behind stone, a deeper churn under the keel, a soft clack where wood touched lodged debris. When the pitch leveled, no higher splash against the far wall, he drew breath and hauled sideways; the beam moved, but stuttered halfway.
Merritt stepped beside him, palms flat on painted iron, and their shared weight cracked the driftwood, breaking it down into harmless shards that swirled away. The gate swept open with deliberate dignity, the boat slid forward, and fresh sky unfolded beyond the upper cill. Silence replaced the churn; only a muted creak lingered under the arching beam. A single bark chip clung to the ragged thumb of Maddox’s woollen glove, the new tear catching the sun as he released the wood.
Translation
