The bird blinked, chest rising, as the cylinder on the bench glimmered like scattered seed.

He eased forward, weight balanced over the balls of his feet, and the sparrow hopped sideways, its claws tapping the brass comb with a brittle ring. “Easy there, little one,” he murmured, voice low enough not to disturb the comb. The accidental note hovered, mismatched against the pin map he had planned, yet the clear correlation between claw and pitch flickered like a sketch of possibility. He braced one hand on the bench, feeling the planks shift a fraction under his shifting center, and lifted the loupe to his eye. His perception sharpened under the loupe’s circles, yet something essential still hovered just beyond focus. He aimed to reset one errant pin, yet the stool’s height nudged his elbow at an awkward angle, so he paused, knees flexed, searching steadier footing. The sparrow flapped onto the comb, the vibration loosening a tiny flake of dried polish that settled where an absent hand might once have swept. Max exhaled, adjusted his stance until weight distributed evenly between heel and toe, and let the loupe hang as he listened to the uneven ticks of the mainspring. In that pause, the earlier illusion cleared; the bird’s stray note matched the unpinned treble line, sketching a ghost of harmony across the room. He chose not to add that pin after all, leaving the space in the cylinder to echo whatever landed there next.

The sparrow tilted its head, saw nothing more to peck, and lifted through the open transom, leaving a trembling hush behind its wings. Max wound the spring half a turn, enough for one brittle phrase, then stepped back, shoulders easing as the cylinder spun. Notes rose, staggered, and stalled exactly where the empty channel waited, a measured silence standing in for the missing timber. Outside, winter sunlight drifted across the bench, while Max eased the door wider for the returning air.
