English Original
Oswin nudged the water-stained door with his shoulder and crossed the threshold into the mill. A swift swallow burst from behind a stack of flour sacks, sliced through the damp warmth, and perched on the beam above the turning shaft. Water drummed into the wheel’s buckets, and the room breathed steam where cold spray met the heated stones. Oswin’s boots ticked across the oak planks; flour dust lifted around his ankles like pale smoke before settling again.
The swallow dipped toward the hopper mouth, veered from the rising heat, and hovered near a knot of cobwebs that quivered in the draft. A second bird flicked out of shadow, joined the first, and they banked side by side through the flickering bar of sun that swung with the wheel’s slow rotation. Their small bodies rode separate arcs, yet each turn matched the other’s rate, a visible togetherness riding the mill’s thermal currents.
Below the rafters, Hedy pinched a couple of uncrushed kernels between finger and thumb, rubbed them, then tipped her head toward Oswin. “Gap’s wide,” she said, voice low under the wheel’s groan. Oswin contemplated the lazy pace of the water and eased the lever forward; the upper stone dropped the breadth of a coin, and the pitch changed, brighter, tighter. He reached for a sliver of pine, snapped it, and began to improvise a narrow shelf along the beam, sliding the fragment toward the birds’ resting spot. Mid-reach he hesitated, palm hovering; the swallow pair circled once more, then settled without his help, talons finding a shallow groove already worn in the timber. Oswin drew back, let the pine sliver fall to the floor, and wiped flour from his wrists.
The wheel quickened as a fresher trickle of water surged down the millrace; flour now sifted in a finer, warmer ribbon, drifting onto the burlap sack that waited open under the chute. Above, the couple of swallows began weaving stems into the groove, each flutter stirring tiny eddies of cool air that met the stones’ rising heat. Togetherness, unasked yet unmistakable, occupied the rafters while grain husks spun beneath. Outside the wall, water kept sliding over moss-dark paddles, pulling the wheel onward in its patient circle.
Translation
