Accumulated terraces layer outward like pages already turned by centuries; each rim shows softer color where winter seep cooled it, harder white where summer glare preserved it. Zadie opens the book, begins a graphite outline of those bands, and her line does not falter until two patterns edge together: the thirty-second lift of distant metal and the thirty-second swell of gas below her. Cadences meet; her own breath pauses without invitation.

The pause loosens when a wagtail lands nearby, tapping the rock in its brisk, three-beat patrol. A thin splash follows the bird’s tail—one guilty trail of rust-orange droplets arcs from its wings onto her page. Water seeps outward, blurring graphite. A sudden realization firms in her shoulders: mineral-rich moisture will crust as it dries, fixing the smear forever. Instead of tearing the sheet free, she adjusts—angling the book so the droplets gather in one corner, then cupping warm pool water with both hands to rinse the corner clean before sediment sets. The wagtail hops away, unconcerned, while her fingers hover in steam, waiting for the page to clear.

A voice drifts from farther down the boardwalk. “Thirty-nine again,” the ranger notes to the air, his routine unbroken. Zadie exhales, lifts the sketchbook, and repeats the stroke that earlier dissolved, though slower now, tracing the softened band the bird’s splash erased. Graphite glides over damp fiber; the tip meets slight drag where dissolved silica already stiffens the paper. She finishes the curve, closes the notebook, and lowers her hands toward the water once more—this time the dip is shallower, her palms barely skim the surface, catching only the thinnest ripple of warmth before the rhythms part and the steam rises unhurried around her knuckles.
