English Original
Every morning, Marco traced the dry path beside the irrigation channel, the air tugging at his sleeves with that familiar mix of wet clay and crushed fennel stems. The water’s low murmur matched the rhythm of his boots, and the steady drip from the upper sluice usually underlined the beat like a tiny metronome. "Morning water’s lazy," he murmured, hardly louder than the channel. Today, the drip was absent; instead, a thin scent of char drifted in its place, as though last night someone burned straw too close to the stones. He paused, toes at the usual puddle, yet the surface lay still, unbroken, and the missing sound hung just beyond audible range, teasing his memory more than his ear.
A separate cadence brushed past: downstream, a loose gate knocked twice, then fell quiet, while his own breathing settled into slower strokes. Between those two tempos, a dragonfly skimmed the surface; its reflection and body parted, rejoined, and seemed to waver whenever a breeze folded the misty skin of the water. A single cylindrical reed—newly snapped and floating sideways—tapped against stone, providing a third pulse that did not care about the other two. Marco crouched, palm hovering over the reed, and noticed pale silt where darker streaks normally marked yesterday’s flow, proof that something unseen had shifted in the night.
He walked to the nearest wooden sluice, wrapped both hands around the iron handle, and attempted a test lift; swollen from weeks of spray, the plank felt obstinate, resisting until his shoulders trembled. One more pull raised it a span, and water leapt sideways through the side channel, its fresh rush confirming the veracity of his suspicion more clearly than any measuring stick. The reed spun out, chased by the new current, and the channel’s earlier hush gained a brighter note, suddenly and perfectly audible. Footsteps, water, and the distant gate now struck together; the three beats overlapped like gears finally catching.
Marco straightened, followed the darkening stripe that spread across the parsley bed, and then let the handle settle back with a low thud. The drip at the upper sluice resumed, matching his slower heartbeat while the char-laced breeze drifted elsewhere, surrendered to the cooler breath rising from watered soil. Further away, unseen roots received their portion, and beyond even that boundary the hillside absorbed whatever the channel spared; water continued, slope decided, and tomorrow’s light would find the flow already murmuring along its own length.
Translation
