English Original
Reflected glare from a passing bus mirror flashed across the bridge rail, then slipped away as a light breeze hurried along the planks. A black-and-white magpie called Faye rode the moving air, wings spread wide, and landed near the center span.
A pale card caught under a crack fluttered in the draft. The flutter drew Faye’s head tilt; she pecked once, tugged, and the stiff invitation slid free. Wind puffed harder, folding one corner against her beak, so she hopped to the sheltered edge and pinned the card with a claw. Another gust rolled a thin tin mug toward her. The mug rattled, whistling softly through its chipped rim. Faye tapped it, felt its hollow lightness, and nudged it beside the invitation. Farther back, a plastic chess knight toppled from an opened backpack and skittered across the boards. Faye darted, knocked it upright, and set it beside the mug, three items now sharing one patch of shade.
Footsteps approached. A boy named Winston paused, eyes on the little row. “You collect treasure too,” he said, voice low so the wind did the loud work instead. A fresh gust rattled the invitation again. To overcome the draft, Winston pressed the mug over the card’s lower edge while Faye steadied the knight with her beak. A loose white ribbon, likely from a wedding earlier that day, billowed past; Winston caught it and let it drape over the mug handle. Together, breeze and bridge quieted for a moment.
Winston slid the ribbon under the mug’s handle and nudged the circle closer to the upright knight. Wind brushed past, but the invitation stayed pinned by their shared arrangement, catching flicks of light along the quiet span.
Translation
