The metal letter felt cold and slightly rough under Hollis's thumb today. He gently lifted it from the wooden tray beside the heavy press. He raised it to inspect the tiny ridge where years of pressing had worn its face. Around him, paper dust drifted through a thin shaft of light, then settled over the ink-mixing stone. Hollis tipped a scoop, letting charcoal pigment pour in a slow trickle onto the stone. The fine grains piled into a small mound and scattered toward the edge. He carefully nudged the loose mound with a narrow metal palette knife. Small particles sifted between the blade and stone like flakes of dark snow.
Arlo stepped from the back room, rolling his sleeves above ink-stained wrists. He set a tray of worn type blocks beside Hollis with care. "Blue everywhere," he said, brushing a trace of powder from his eyebrow. Hollis answered with a thoughtful tilt of his head and added bright cobalt grains to the charcoal mix. He patiently ground the colors together on the smooth stone. A violet ring swirled across the paste, opening like the iris inside an eye. The lighter grains had hidden moisture; now they clumped and refused to spread evenly across the stone. Hollis pressed harder. The paste resisted and a sharp clunk sounded from the press lever behind them.
Both workers suddenly froze, their shoulders holding tight above heavily spotted aprons. The press lever had jammed because stray grains had trickled beneath its hinge. Hollis blew gently, but the dust only shifted and settled again around the metal. Arlo slid a thin card under the hinge and coaxed the powder out. The lever dropped free, releasing a small avalanche of blue and black specks onto the floor. They quietly watched the bright colors mingle near their worn boots. Overhead, the lamp buzzed once and steadied. The cloud of pigment drifted downward until it rested on the silent sheets hanging to dry.
