The brass hinge felt smooth yet slightly sticky beneath Lily's steady thumb. Each afternoon she soaked museum pieces in warm water, then rubbed away tired wax. Today’s hinge came from an old display case, its edges dark with age. A cotton cloth, bright with a single sunflower print, waited beside the bowl. Steam floated above the surface and tickled her nose, leaving beads on her lashes. A beetle crawled across the pine board, tapping grain with tiny feet, a fellow traveler on the bench.
Sunlight sharpened through the skylight and poured straight onto the waiting metal parts. Heat built fast; the hinge warmed until Lily’s fingertips lifted away by reflex. Melted wax glistened and slipped, slowly sliding toward the waiting sunflower cloth. A fellow apprentice, Glen, stepped inside, wiping dust from his sleeves, and watched the wobbling hinge. "The bowl is almost empty," he said, tipping his head toward the fading steam. Lily nodded and rolled the hinge farther from the bright patch, keeping her grip loose. The glass weight shaped like a clown fish rested nearby, orange stripes catching the heat. As the table warmed, condensation formed beneath the weight during its pause. The bright figurine drifted a finger’s width across the polished surface today.
A thick cloud crossed the sun and drew a sudden shadow over the bench. Metal cooled at once, and a thin white film settled across the hinge’s shiny back. The glass weight halted slowly, yet a damp circle remained on the warm board. Evening air slipped through the roof vent, cooling steam into bright tiny silver beads. Frost soon clouded the clown fish weight, and the orange stripes slowly vanished.
Translation
