English Original
Four wide tiles lay between the stairwell hatch and a low metal table near the railing.
Leander walked those tiles slowly, tapping each one with his shoe for its hollow sound. Hollis followed and placed a short candle on the table, its wax already shining under sunlight. A shimmer rose from the metal top, and both friends kept their fingers just above it. The morning air stayed cool, yet the bright surface offered a thin layer of stored heat. From the street below rose a distant hum of engines mixed with a trace of cooling asphalt. Leander sniffed; a floral note drifted from the candle, mixing with tar and distant frying food. He nudged the candle toward the shade, curious how the wax would react to gentler warmth.
First, he tilted the candle slightly and watched a pale mixture of blue and white wax slide. The flow met the cooler tile edge and halted, forming a rounded pool that thickened within seconds. Next, Hollis tapped the rim, sending a thinner stripe across warmer metal where it spread much farther. Each stripe cooled at a different speed, and tiny ridges marked the pattern of their pauses. Steam rose the moment a lost drop touched Leander's stainless bottle, then vanished into the open sky. Both friends laughed, then repeated the tilt from a new corner, layering fresh colors over the first. The rooftop tiles now held a small mosaic of cooled waves, glossy where the sunlight still pressed.
While they studied the shapes, a tiny insect landed on the warmest pool and stuck its front feet. The creature pulled away, leaving two neat holes that looked like eyes inside a swirling wax face. Hollis whispered, "It painted with us," and pressed the rim once more to frame the accidental portrait. Cooler wind crossed the roof, and the raised edges stiffened into gentle ridges under the air. Leander nodded, slid the candle into the table's shadow, and brushed stray wax from his thumb. He set the quiet candle beside the bottle; the last ribbon of color hardened and caught the light.
Translation
