English Original
Canvas rubbed against Atlas's palms as he pulled a flat cart into the storeroom. The wooden wheels squeaked against smooth concrete and dragged faint gray lines behind them. A small bell above the door announced his entrance with a sharp ring. Silence settled over the narrow aisles. A gray cat lifted its head from a patch of sun near the back wall and stretched. Its claws caught on burlap before it padded after the cart. Every weekday, Atlas came here to restack bundles of cotton towels. He left them ready for the changing rooms beside the old swimming pool.
He gripped the first bundle and slid it toward an upper shelf. The cotton grazed the pine board, met light resistance, then settled. When he reached for the next bundle, his fingers met a sticky patch. A cracked jar of scented cleaner had leaked during the night. Syrupy drops spread across the shelf, turning smooth wood into tacky glue. Atlas tried to tug the carton free, but its base stuck fast and growled softly against the grain. Steam from the heater earlier had thickened the spill, and the grip grew stronger each second. The cat sniffed the edge, whiskers twitching. It tapped the carton corner, leaving tiny paw prints on the glossy film.
Atlas imagined towels pressed against that mess later and frowned. He kept the pile balanced with one hand. With the other, he peeled a thin sheet of waxed paper from an empty box. He slid the paper under the carton, letting it skate across the slick surface. The friction shifted; the carton loosened and slid with a low scrape. Atlas murmured, "Easy, box, slide for me," though no one answered. He guided it onto a higher, dry ledge. Beside it lay a deflated blue ring that once floated in the swimming pool. The cat settled on the warm cart, tail curling. Atlas folded the waxed paper and placed it beside the leak. He pushed the cart out, gray wheel marks trailing behind.
Translation
