Warm wax from an unlit candle lingered inside the keeper’s cottage. Juliet followed Troy through the doorway and onto the stone path outside the tower. Light bounced off the sea and flashed across the white walls. The tower’s spiral stair waited inside, dim despite the clear afternoon. Juliet carried a small painted seashell, planning to place it near the great lens as a friendly exhibit.
Each step groaned, and cool stone pressed against Juliet’s fingertips as she touched the inner wall. A patch of salt spray had dried, leaving a textured film that glittered when the sun caught it. Higher up, refraction inside the giant glass bowl scattered narrow rainbows over the iron beams. Juliet paused, squinting as sudden glare skated across her eyes and turned the railing white. Troy’s voice drifted back, “The shell sits low; the light tricks us here.” Juliet lowered the seashell and watched her own silhouette float across the curved glass.
At the lantern platform, a flat brass ledge extended below the lens, built for small tools. Juliet set the seashell there, yet a beam refracted through the thick glass and painted moving rings around it. The bright loops dazzled her, so her hand twitched and nudged the shell toward the edge. Troy raised a narrow candle and blocked the beam; shadow cooled the brass and the shell steadied. Reflection from the candle’s wax created a soft amber glow, and the rings vanished. Both visitors bent closer; ridges on the shell mirrored the lighthouse structure, each one catching a silver line. “It looks like a secret map,” Juliet whispered. She left the shell resting, half lit and half dark, while color shift wandered across the glass above. Her fingertips stayed close to the ledge, and the beam hovered beside them without deciding on a shape.
Translation
