"The ladder shakes again," Ruby said.
Kent steadied the side rail with one broad hand against the knotty wood. A quick rattle moved through the timber and echoed along the hollow trunk beside them. Morning air felt fresh on Ruby's cheeks, and the aromatic scent of ripe apples drifted under the leaves. Above, a starling flicked its wings; the sudden rustle caused a soft hum in the crowded branches. At their feet, the family dog, a speckled terrier, tilted its head toward every creak. Its ears twitched like small antennae, sorting each tiny vibration in the grass. Ruby lifted a round pear from the lower branch of the tree. Melting juice slipped over her knuckles before dropping onto grass already dotted with fallen fruit.
Each time the wooden ladder creaked under weight, the terrier barked beside it. Its sharp bark bounced between the trunks, catching a metallic resonance from the empty buckets. The sharp echo beneath the branches startled Ruby, and her grip suddenly loosened. A single pear rolled out and began a slow voyage down the slight slope of the grassy row. It bumped the ladder foot, nudged the basket's rim, and came to rest near the dog's nose. Kent crouched beside the rung and tested the shaky ladder foot with his palm. The bare wood sat on a smooth stone, and that hard contact caused the vibrating noise.
Kent carefully fetched a narrow strip of folded cloth from his back pocket. Ruby knelt on the grass and pressed the soft bundle under the lower rung. Kent added weight with his boot, making the fit snug against the stone. The thick cloth instantly muffled the next wooden creak that tried to rise. Only a gentle hum passed through the frame, too soft to worry the dog. Ruby let out a short laugh and said, "That hum is softer than a purring cat." Ruby carefully rested the runaway pear on top of the others in the basket. Ruby dusted her palms while Kent nudged the basket closer to the folded cloth they had fixed. The basket and the cloth rested side by side at the ladder foot as leaves whispered overhead.
Translation
