He rubbed his sleeve across a dark section of the rim where older varnish had peeled. “Anything interesting under that sift?” he asked while small particles tapped the tray like dry rain. Oswin kept shaking; only a small fraction slipped through each time, slowly. He lifted the sieve higher and shook again with steady arms above.
