English Original
"The bucket looks full," Gwen said.
Delia steadied the wooden pail against her knee, and a slow ring of mash slid around the inside. The mix of warm water and ground grain moved with syrup thickness. It left a shiny trail on the metal. She tilted it a finger’s width and watched the surface swirl once, then settle. A faint wind slipped through the wire, lifting straw dust that danced above the feed bins. Tiny bubbles pressed upward where the mash touched the side, as if quiet breath rose from below. Delia dipped a ladle and felt steady pressure against her wrist. She poured the first scoop into the narrow trough. The mash spread, thick yet smooth, and a single drip escaped, seeping between straw stalks before vanishing. Nothing looked like trouble yet, so she repeated the pour, each scoop loosening more grain from the bottom.
Gwen lifted a fresh scoop herself, changing angle. The mash overflowed a shallow lip and curved back, gathering in a rolling wave. An acorn, hidden somewhere in the bucket, bobbed to the surface and rode the small current. It bumped the edge, flipped, and splashed a blot onto Gwen’s sleeve. She gave a short whistle. "That splash traveled far," she said. The mark spread like creamy paint across the dark cloth. She shook her arm, and a stringy line stretched off the fabric. It recoiled like an elastic band before snapping back into the trough. Delia shifted along the perch bar, adding another ladle so the acorn drifted away from the spout. Soon the trough showed a gentle ridge of feed that still moved. A shallow swirl circled the stubborn nut. Straw under their boots held darker patches where earlier drips had seeped. Gwen rested the ladle upright inside the pail. The mash kept rotating in a slow ring around the hidden acorn.
Translation
