Story Content
English Original
Darby unrolls the paper bag and tips a slow line of seeds onto the platform's shaded side. He steps the three short paces from the bench to the post and back, moving as evenly as he can. Oona sits at the bench's far end with her notebook open, shoes square on the pale gravel. The tree behind them lifts a gnarled trunk, grey plates of lichen spreading along shallow cracks in the bark. A soft patch of decay darkens one corner of the little roof, the grain slightly sunken near a nail. Beyond the path, a green water butt stands by a shed, and a slow drip marks circles on damp stone. Leaves stir above, laying thin bars of shade across the bench while the small square shadow slides on the tray.
Two finches stand off on the rail, bodies angled opposite, while a dove lands and flexes the perch with its weight. The tilt rolls a thin pile toward the open side, and loose seeds skitter across the wood like dry sand. To keep beaks busy below, Darby shakes a handful into the grass around the post, brightening the ground scatter zone. He pours extra along the exposed edge to balance the pile, turning the bag slightly for a narrower stream. The rolled top slips; the fold uncoils, and a split opens along a crease with a short, papery rip. A quick slide pours out, drumming the exposed corner and trailing into the grass beside his shoe before he steadies it.
Birds lift at the sudden patter; the rail clears, and the platform shows one crowded mound and one thin stripe. Darby sets the bag on the bench and brushes the spilled trail back together with the flat edge of his hand, while Oona pinches the mouth into a neat spout and holds it open low over the seat. Darby sweeps the extra heap back into the bag. Only the shaded line remains, narrow under the roof where the breeze loses reach, and the rail stays open. "Lower branch, striped chest," Oona says, lifting her pencil while the leaves tremble against a pale sky. A nuthatch drops from the gnarled limb, crosses one bright gap, and taps three seeds in quick order. On the shaded strip, three pale husks line up, and Darby traces them lightly with a fingertip. Beside him, Oona holds the notebook close and darkens the tiny eye with one small dot.
Translation
