English Original
The basket handle felt rough in Ella's hands.
Cool air moved through the open shed.
She and Otto walked to the garden bed.
They wanted a red tomato for their salad.
Clusters hung low, and many fruits ripened on vines.
Ella hoped the biggest one was ready today.
She bent close and touched the smooth skin.
Ella whispered, 'Over here, the red one.'
Otto said, 'I see it. It looks firm.'
Ella set the basket on a curled garden hose.
She reached up, and her sleeve brushed a leaf.
The basket slid, the kink straightened, and water rushed.
The sprinkler started and sprayed their shoes.
Cold drops hit the soil and made quick puddles.
Mud felt yucky on Ella's hands and wrists.
They stepped back, but the spray reached the basket.
Otto ran to the faucet and turned the handle.
The stream slowed, and the sprinkler stopped.
He lifted the basket under the hose and rinsed gently.
They agreed to wash the big tomato first.
Ella held the vine steady, and Otto picked it.
Water ran clear, and the skin shone like glass.
Ella breathed out and gave a small nod.
Otto set the clean tomato into the basket.
Translation
