English Original
Shea tipped a shallow tray, and a small shell slid along the wood and spun. Fiona sat beside the window with a book, and her pen rested on a ceramic mug. Shea moved the hand lens in a slow circle, then set it down. Its rim rolled a finger’s width and stopped against the open notebook. Pebbles stayed where Shea placed them, heavy and quiet, but the shell kept turning until its momentum faded. Shea bent over the page like an inspector, arms steady, and drew an arc to show the spin. When Shea lifted a pressed leaf from a paper tray, a fragrant note rose from the dry veins. Warm light lay across the table and showed the grain in the wood.
Air from the window cooled Shea’s forearms, and the sunbeam shrank; dusk moved across the corner. The small clock on the shelf announced six with two soft chimes. Shea kept sorting and shifted the trays closer to the glass, changing the angle of the lens. A tiny round seed suddenly shot from the spinning shell, rolled across the notebook, and tapped the lens. The lens ring wobbled, then settled against the spine. “That came from the shell,” Fiona said, leaning in but keeping her book open on her knee. Shea steadied the tray with one palm and kept working. Shea slid a pebble to make space and noted a pale line on the shell. A green smear stayed on Shea’s fingertip, and the seed rested in the narrow gap beside the trays. A lamp in the alley switched on and cast a ladder of light over the paper and glass. The window darkened into a flat mirror and the last bright strip on the table vanished.
Translation
