The hose nozzle rattled against a tin tray edge. Metal clinked, but no water came out. Cool air moved through the open shed door.

Flora and Juno wanted to water the bean pots. The weather was cool, and the soil looked pale. They set two equal rows along the short bench.

Flora gripped the nozzle and turned the small ring. It stayed stuck, and the stiff hose scraped wood. "It's tight," Flora said. A bucket slid an inch and tapped Juno's trousers.

Juno held the hose near the light on the floor. She pressed her palm along the bent green tube. "This part is warm," Juno said. One part felt warm; the shaded part felt cool.

The warm section bent easily between her hands. They dragged the kink into that warm patch of floor. Flora rubbed it fast, then turned the ring again. The bend loosened, and the nozzle opened at last.

Bursts of spray shot out and struck the low shelf. Light pots tumbled, and a trowel slid into soil. Water spread across the floor in a bright fan.

Juno turned the stream toward the waiting bean pots. Flora set the fallen pots upright and wiped her trousers. She hooked the nozzle over the bucket rim.
