Dry leaves brushed the fox's paws.

Warm dust clung to its fur and belly. A low hedge hid a small, dark den nearby. It trotted toward a gap under the hedge.

Cool air moved through the orchard. An apple lay on the path near the hedge. A clear lens from a toy sat in bright sun. Nadine held a small basket and watched the grass. "It's bright here," Nadine said, and stood still.

Light flashed from the lens and hit the path. Wind moved leaves, and the flash faded again. Then sun cleared, and the bright circle returned. The fox blinked, lowered its head, and waited.

Leaves hung still for a breath, and glare dropped suddenly. The fox sprang forward across the dappled ground fast. Its shoulder bumped the apple and set it rolling quickly. The apple touched a small shell near the lens there. The shell tipped, and rainwater spilled over the lens glass.

The bright spot dulled, and the flashing grew soft nearby. Wind moved again, but the lens stayed wet and dim. The fox slid under the hedge into the den. The fox pushed into the den.
