Cold rock presses Joelle's knees.
Her hands rest in her lap.
The top is grainy with sand.
A pale dry ring stays on it.
Damp air sits under the leaves.
Wet earth smells rich by the bank.
Thin water runs over pebbles.
Joelle watches the water.
A small flower floats past her rock.
It slides across her far view.
She tilts her head a little.
On the far bank, Flora crouches.
An open notebook rests by her knee.
A brown leaf lifts on its corner.
It drops and touches the flower.
The flower spins and clears away.
A narrow path shows above the bank.
A hare steps onto the path.
Its ear twitches once, then pauses.
"I hear the drip now," Flora says.
Joelle keeps still and watches.
Joelle watches the small rings again.
