Story Content
English Original
Opal pressed a warm chalk stick between her fingers and felt the board’s rough skin catch.
She set a steady trunk line for a tall tree, aiming from the dry top into the damp lower half. The chalk scraped with a gritty sound, and a fine airflow under the awning pushed pale dust sideways off the stroke. Below the shadow line, moisture thinned the mark and sent tiny streams that branched along pits in the green surface. She opened the supply box; the small latch mechanism clicked, and a cooler blue rested smooth and dry in her palm. She touched the new tip through the wet patch anyway, and the color sank, like dry sand swallowed by a ripple. Leaning closer, her breath warmed the cool board and a pale fog bloomed for a heartbeat over the boundary. Her line crossed it and skipped, leaving dotted gaps, where a proud bolt and the sudden moisture interrupted the stroke.
Rain tapped the canvas above with hollow, even beats, and the pavement set a gentle warmth against her shoes. A chalky, mineral smell sat near the ledge, and distant puddles wobbled with passing steps that faded.
Joel worked on the opposite end with exuberant zigzags, and he said, “It squeaks up here.” Opal held the blue at a shallower angle and drew more lightly, keeping her strokes slow and steady. She stepped back half a pace, and the space in front of her mouth stayed clear of fog. A brief lull left tiny droplets shrinking along the lower board, then cooler air drifted in and they beaded again. When she brushed a smear with the felt, a thin paste formed and dulled the edge above the shadow line. She lifted the eraser and set it in a small niche on the tray, raised so it no longer touched moisture. To hold back her own fog, she covered her mouth with a sleeve and kept the angle shallow across that boundary. A short white stub rolled with each scrape’s vibration, but a bolt head stopped it before the ledge lip. From a small step back, the dotted gaps lined up along three hidden bumps near the frame.
By evening, the drizzle had ended and the lower board dried to a faint, chalk-tinted film. Powder lay in thin ridges under the ledge, and a pale tide mark held the place where water once ran. Along the shadow line, her trunk’s faint gaps still dotted across each bolt head, fixed inside the cooled green.
Translation
