English Original

From the loading-door threshold, Tamsin watched a damp crescent darken the flour-dusted floor beside the hopper.

Swallows skimmed under the rafters, and the wheel’s shadow flickered across a bar of light laid over sacks.

Her thumb and forefinger already rubbed a pinch of warm flour to paste, then touched it to her tongue for chalky sweetness.

Across the room, Clyde eased the lever, and stone pressed stone with a low pitch that tasted faintly dry on the palate.

She stepped inside and crouched near the crescent, which curved like a heel print yet held no ridges, only a thin wet shine.

The air tasted sweet from the loft’s barley, with a briny edge drifting up from the millrace vault beneath the floorboards.

Grain left the hopper in slow whispers, and a bridge formed; her wooden comb slipped along the chute to break the damp clumps.

She tapped the hopper once more and caught more flour on her tongue, mellow now, though gritty between the teeth at the edges.

A sudden hiss rose from the brazier, and her head turned toward the kettle as steam flared along the spout and wet her lip with tin.

“Tea again,” Clyde said from the bench, wiping his hands on his apron without looking up from the sack he was knotting.

She crossed to the brazier, slid the kettle aside, and the first sip sent a flare of sweetness, then an unresolved sour aftertaste.

The tin cup tapped her teeth; she swallowed, set the cup down, and mopped the damp circle the kettle had left on the plank.

Outside the door the wheel kept turning, and the oak shaft groaned once, a taste of iron hovering on the back of her tongue.

When she returned to the stones, the bar of light had moved, and the crescent on the floor had dried to a pale rim.

She lifted the wooden scoop, tilted it into the light, and the rim of its mouth matched the arc exactly, edge to edge.

Her hand rested on the lever notch, then nudged the coarser setting by a breath, while the wheel outside kept its slow circuit.

The comb’s teeth loosened the bridge again, flour poured, and a warmer puff lifted; she tasted it and found the grit had thinned slightly.

She rubbed finger and thumb together as before, only now the tea’s sour edge lingered, and her pinch met cooler, silkier flour.

She pinched a fresh fall of flour between finger and thumb.

Translation
