Recorder Drains on Moss as Mushrooms Fill the Basket -

Story Content
English Original
A plastic recorder lay on a cushion of moss, its finger holes holding tiny beads of rain.
A coin of sun warmed its pale tube while the ground-level air pressed cool against the moss and leaves.
Beyond it, a fallen birch lay straight as a pale fuselage, bracket shelves banded brown and cream along its side.
Oona sank to her knees, palms reading the moss's damp coolness through fabric that darkened a shade with the touch.
Warren rested the basket against one knee, fern fronds keeping a chanterelle's apricot caps from pressing into the porcini.
From the beech trunk, a run of woodpecker taps set a dry percussion under the softer drip of leaf water.
A faint wren trill came and went, and cooler air pooled low where the ground stayed shadowed.
Oona reached for the pale tube and tilted it, and a thin line of water threaded from the farthest hole.
That morning it had ridden in the pack's mesh pocket; a passing branch had scraped the side and worked it loose.
She set the mouthpiece against her lip without blowing and felt the plastic carry a trace of sun-warmth.
Her breath clouded the window of it for a blink, a soft plume that left the tube clean and a little brighter.
A quick puff gave one shy note that stayed unresolved, not rising or falling before it thinned into the cool.
Near the birch, an arc of small brown caps pressed through leaf litter where the soil showed, their ring tracing the buried threads.
Oona lifted one gently at the base and found white hairs clinging with specks of earth, then eased it back in place.
On the dead beech, oyster fans stacked like pale saucers, each edge firm under a thumbnail where the flesh pushed back.
Warren twisted a stem with two slow turns, lifted the clean base, and checked the field guide's damp page beside the stump.
He glanced over and said, 'We only pick what we can name for certain,' then let the page lie under its beads.
Oona's hand hovered toward the brown ring again, slowed, and retreated, and the basket stayed lighter by that small decision.
She slid the recorder into the pack's side mesh this time, its plastic dry now and cool against her wrist.
A bright gap in the canopy worked like a clerestory, laying a warm oval on her shoulder while her knees pressed the chill ground.
She lifted it out once more, set mouth to mouthpiece, and offered a single line that the woodpecker's taps answered in runs.
The note rose on her breath and rode the cool air toward the leaf clerestory, still climbing as the coins of sun shifted.
