Lily tapped a short plank. "What bent this board?"

A faint glue smell rose near the bench. She raised one end to see under it. The stiff wood pressed her palm.

A tight elastic loop stretched from a peg to it. The loop slid fast, then snapped off the edge. Its snap struck a second loop on a thin stick. The stick bent back, then sprang straight and flicked a band. That band stretched around two pegs and sprang free.

The flying band pulled hard on an elastic strand on a lid. The tin lid flipped up and swung back and forth. "It is moving," Seth said, stepping back from the bench. The swinging lid hit a line of light rubber bands. Each band stretched, slipped a peg, and twanged the next.

The snaps moved faster along the row of pegs. Lily slid a tray under the last swinging lid. A small mound of soft sand lay in the tray. The lid dropped into the sand and slowed at once. One free band still crept under the lifted plank.
