"Where did that patch come from?" Blake eased the door and stepped inside. He came each afternoon to count jars and straighten boxes by touch. His palms knew the weight of paper cups and the curve of glass. A gray cat sat by the window, tail flicking once along the sill. Cool air brushed his knuckles, and cardboard gave off a dry smell. He slid a jar of popcorn kernels forward and marked a line on paper. A popcorn kernel pressed the front, pale as a bead against the curve. Light cut through the pane and hit the jar of kernels, then flared across labels. A bright oval skidded along the floor as the sun shifted outside. The cat crouched and tapped at it, paws making a tiny skid on wood. Glare washed over Blake’s eyes, and his grip firmed on the pencil. He kept counting and stepped left to shade a name with his hand. His thumb brushed dust from the jar and left a clean oval on glass. Pink light from the blossom jar poured through, and a tiny flower shape formed. It sat on the paper like a soft stamp, then slipped off when he moved. Near the window, a soggy corner of a box pressed flat under a cup stack. Blake pointed and said, "Not today, friend," and the cat blinked. He finished his row while the bright patch kept traveling across the floor. Outside, the sun slips another finger’s width, and the bright patch climbs. Across the jars, a thin band of color widens and runs along the shelf.
