Story Content
English Original
A honeyed smell lifted from the leather horse by the rack, and Neve halted beside the taut white screen.
"New polish on the tack?" Opal breathed, while two pale ovals on the bamboo showed finger-wear near the balance point.
Neve slid two fingers along the bamboo rod and eased the horse into the puppet zone.
Her entrance ran the same path—close for crisp hooves, then a wide turn for a taller shape.
Warm leather and lamp-heated wood braided in the air, and the metal guard gave a faint iron breath against her wrists.
Her cuffs stayed rolled, her hair tied high, and the clear span above the guard left nothing loose to drift near it.
Warmth from the lamp breathed over her knuckles, and a resinous sweetness thickened around the horse's polished rim.
Close to the fabric, the nostril cut sharp and small; a hand's width back, the whole head grew soft and immense.
She tipped for the usual prance, yet the paper forelock began to droop, bending toward the stallion's brow.
Neve set the spare figure on the rack in hurry, and the base gave a bright tap that seemed to reverberate.
A quarter turn on the rod offered only nose and ear, and the outline thickened where the oiled rim met the glow.
The bamboo's cool node touched her palm, and she counted a quiet beat on that ridge before the hooves kissed fabric.
The tap faded fast, but her grip slowed as the horse's belly strap hung slack, the tiny saddle cinch no longer snug.
Opal looked past her wrist and said, "Almost time," while the audience side received only a dark ear and a wavering mane.
Neve rolled her sleeves higher, kept her elbows low beneath the hot guard, and edged the rod nearer to trade blur for clarity.
The horse moved in a neat step, then its warmed shoulder creaked, and the luscious sheen along its rim turned almost black.
From the audience side came a small gasp, brief as a hiccup, and then the silhouettes beyond the screen went still.
She lifted the rod a finger's breadth, yet the slack strap kept the belly lower, and the profile read older and gentler.
Her own thumb's shadow slid across the screen for an instant, a maker's blur falling into the scene she usually kept pure.
She steadied the rod, held the horse so that the ear stayed crisp, and watched the forelock sag into a different creature.
Leather told of years at the lamp: smoothed edges, dulled dye, and a brightened nose where fingers always pinched the same spot.
Neve let the towering shadow settle smaller, left the prance for another day, and reached under the saddle for the knot.
She let height slip for edges that seemed nearer, allowing the screen to hold something smaller than she had planned.
Her thumb rested against the loosened cinch, the leather warm under her nail, and the pull she pictured had not begun.
Translation
Neve
