English Original

Grey pressed the square stamp into his clay slab, and a short, flat thud rang out instead of the usual soft squelch. The surface answered with gritty resistance, as if an unseen pebble sat just below the skin. When he lifted the handle, one corner of the pattern showed crisp edges while the opposite corner looked faint, almost whispered away. Around him, rolling pins rumbled like distant carts, and the wet cloth station let out a slow drip-drip that kept steady rhythm with a classmate’s sponge strokes. He laid a fingertip on the deeper corner to measure the depth; moisture cooled his nail, yet the shallow side already felt drier. A quiet contentment buzzed through the room—low chatter, taps, and the teacher’s shoes crossing the tiles—so each muted stamp brought its own small pleasure to the choir of sounds. Grey angled the handle and tried again, pushing longer but no harder, hoping the pattern would even out.

A muffled pop escaped the clay and startled a tiny gnat perched on the slab’s rim; the insect shot upward, beating frantic wings close to Basil’s ear at the next station. Basil flinched, his elbow knocking his rolling pin, and the pin drummed across the tilted table toward the stamp shelf. The shelf vibrated; a wide border stamp rattled loose and slid forward. Grey caught the tremor in the wood, swung his free hand, and intercepted the heavy block before it could crash onto drying tiles below, yet its carved edge still brushed his own slab, leaving an unintended ridge across wet clay. The chain of sounds lingered—gnat wings fading, rolling pin settling against a clamp post, shelf brackets humming. Grey had been ready to press once more, but now he steadied the rogue border stamp with both hands, its weight rocking gently while carved lines hovered above the partially marked slab.

Translation
