Story Content
English Original
Grey knelt on the flat patch of grass and set the bamboo strip across the pre-drilled dowel shaft.
Blair moved through the retrieval area, lifting fallen copters and laying them blade-up along the bench's comparison line.
The sun warmed one end of the bench, and the other stayed cool in the shadow cast by the supply box.
Earlier buffing had left a faint powder on Grey's fingertips, and the sandpaper still hissed when he tested an edge.
He spun the dowel between his palms and let go; the copter wobbled, dived, and patted the grass within two meters.
He eyed the ribbon at the wind-flag point; it stretched into a slim pointer toward the trees and held almost steady.
Grey sanded one tip with gentle strokes, then tried again; the hum rose, mixing with leaf noise near the thatched shelter.
The buzzing startled a grasshopper in the launch pad’s border, and it sprang against the cardboard box beside the bench.
The roll of cotton string nudged free and turned across the grass; its edge brushed Blair’s ankle, and Blair hopped sideways.
Grey stepped away from the launch pad while the roll wandered on, turning pale grass stems into a loose track.
For a breath, his fingers touched the box; the cardboard felt warm on top and cooler underneath where shade pooled.
When he returned, the bamboo strip lay half in sun on the bench's bright end, and its grain showed a fresh curl.
Pale dust from buffing clung in a patchy line along the edge, and sighting down it revealed one tip lifted more.
The ribbon had shifted a finger's width; the breeze at height had changed, and the clearing carried a green, grassy scent.
Grey eased the dowel into the hole, set his knees, began a slower spin, and the shaft stayed straight on release.
He eased both hands away at once; the blades bit air, and the copter climbed while sliding toward the ribbon’s faint angle.
He tucked the string’s loose tail under the box flap; the roll stopped wandering and the bench space stayed open.
At treetop height, the copter met a patchy layer and tilted; the slight curl and the breeze together pulled its circle wider.
Blair kept arranging the comparison line, palm flat as a pointer while each shaft rolled once and settled parallel.
Grey watched the spiral track cross that thin guide of cloth, and the small humming disc held its sideways arc and kept drifting.
Translation
