The piece had been carved by her grandfather, and every groove still carried the scent of cedar. Passing the fountain, she spotted a squirrel hanging from an ivy rope like an acrobat. The lane climbed, curved, and narrowed until hedges brushed her elbows lightly. Moist earth released a fresh smell each time her boots pressed the ground. After fifteen minutes, an iron gate appeared, its surface painted bright green. It swung inward with a faint creak; the courtyard beyond looked oddly familiar. A plaque beside the door showed the museum's name, yet the bakery stood one street away. She realised the shortcut had folded upon itself, returning her to the same square she had left. If she had marked the first crossroads, she would have noticed the circle and saved precious time. The delay might seem small, yet its profound impact unfolded immediately before her. Sunset light already stained the clouds orange, and visiting hours ended at five. Mila exhaled, pressed the parcel against her chest, and turned toward home. The wrapped parcel rested in her palm under the soft evening light.
