English 原文
Nora’s echoing footsteps crossed the marble corridor and entered the research annex of the city conservatory. A dust-specked poster on the back wall showed two trees locked root to root; above the drawing, one bold word remained legible: SYMBIOSIS. Beside the door, a cloth-bound binder waited on a hook, its spine stamped in fading gold: Kinship. Nora balanced a narrow glass jar against her hip, the jar holding a vine gathered from last month’s expedition. Pale tendrils pressed against the glass like coils of chalk, already thick enough to test the lid.
A waist-high oak shelf ran beneath a skylight. Nora lifted the jar and settled it onto the board. The wood dipped without warning, yielding under the extra weight; the jar skated forward. Both hands shot out, catching the rim just before it tipped. She pushed the shelf bracket tighter, then replaced the jar with a measured flourish, as though the tiny performance might steady the lumber. Light filtered through broad leaves overhead, turning the water inside the jar emerald. For a moment the vine rested in silence.
A faint tick followed. A root had pressed against the inner wall, carving a hairline that crept from base to shoulder. Another tick—then the glass surrendered with a soft pop. Split halves swung apart, and green water splashed across the shelf. Seeds no bigger than freckles rolled over the edge and pattered onto the tiles. Nora stooped, palms sweeping the floor, gathering slick beads before they vanished beneath workbenches. One seed lodged between floorboards; she pried it free and placed it in her pocket, drops sliding down her wrist.
She found an empty basin, tilted it under the broken vine, and scooped every loose fragment inside. Fronds fanned outward, relieved of their former cage, twisting toward the skylight. A cracked shard slipped from the shelf and chimed once on the tiles; Nora nudged it aside with her boot, then opened the binder to a fresh page between notes on soil density. Glass rested on one corner, weighing the page flat. Water glimmered between overturned leaves on the tile.
