Milo Before Dawn-

English 原文
Milo had always stared at the narrow bell tower during late walks. Rumors said a white owl perched behind its cracked shutters, and he wanted a photograph to prove it. Before dawn, mist hovered above wet grass, wrapping the school courtyard in muffled solitude. The ladder had been set against the stone wall by maintenance workers weeks earlier, and its rungs still felt solid beneath his shoes. A camera swung from his neck; spare lenses rattled inside a canvas bag. A distant clock chimed five times, and yellow windows across the square blinked out together. He paused, listening for wings, then began the climb, each step scraping dust from forgotten bricks.
Half-way up, the camera slipped, tapped the wall, and the lens cap tumbled into darkness. Milo climbed down to retrieve it, only to find the cap resting in a puddle that smeared its glass. If he had brought taller boots, the cold water would have bothered him less. He wiped the cap on his sleeve and started up again. Near the window, a loose board refused to budge, so he pushed with his shoulder until brittle nails popped free. The dusty room behind offered no immediate understanding; stacks of hymn books lay collapsed, and spider webs connected pews like failed rope bridges.
A sudden hoot snapped the silence as Milo placed the tripod. The shape on the sill turned out to be a wooden decoy, its paint flaking in ribbons. While he adjusted the focus, real wings brushed the roof above; moonlight caught a living owl that glided past the empty bell and settled on the ladder’s top rung. Longing drifted in the cool air, thin as the mist still rolling across grass. Milo swung the camera round just in time, shutter clicking while feathers stirred the breeze. Morning light rested on the silent lens.
