English 原文
Milo had carried a paper lantern across the deserted courtyard, aiming to set it on the highest beam of the library’s wooden porch before evening visitors arrived. Pigeons soared between cracked tiles above him, and their quick shadows crossed his hands while he knotted a thin rope to the lantern’s frame. The rope had been threaded through a tiny metal loop earlier, yet the final stretch remained out of reach. He dragged an old ladder forward; its hinges groaned in the wide solitude, a sound that felt louder than the bell that offered a distant bronze serenade.
If the ladder had been steady, he would have finished in seconds, but one leg sank into a shallow hole, tilting the steps. Milo clutched the side rail, stepped down, and searched for another angle. Stacking two empty apple crates under the sun-bleached rung looked sensible until the top crate slipped, scattering dry leaves. He steadied himself, breathed, and tried again, shifting the ladder nearer a rain pipe. Wind spun through the eaves, shaking loose dust that coated his hair. Each attempt ended with the lantern swinging just short of its mark, as though the air itself wished to keep him grounded.
During his third climb the unexpected happened: a lively gust slid under the lantern’s paper shell, causing it to soar from his fingertips. Instead of falling, it drifted upward, candle still unlit, until its frame hooked naturally over the very beam he had been reaching for. The rope straightened, and the lantern hung securely, its delicate surface glowing faintly where late sunlight pressed through. Milo blinked, then laughed once, a brief sound swallowed by the wind that seemed to transcend stone walls. Gold light pooled over the porch, holding a quiet hint of divinity. Soft light rested on the silent beam.
