English 原文
Sienna steadied a trolley bearing a heavy stained-glass panel in the dim service corridor. She had spent three months cutting tiny shards until the pattern formed a swirling river. The delicate arch above the entrance had been measured by her mentor during spring, yet flu kept him home today. The library joined a city project that listed creative empowerment among its goals, so volunteers filled every corner. Wheels clattered over a raised tile, tilting the frame; her knee shot forward, nudging the load back into balance. A brass threshold waited ahead, bright under the afternoon lamps, while footsteps echoed behind her.
At the doorway, she braced a ladder and tried to lift the panel alone. Wood groaned, and a rung slipped, sending a jolt through her arms. She slid the frame down, fetched a sandbag, and pressed it against one foot to steady the ladder. The pulley rope gripped the frame, yet grit jammed the wheel. She flicked the rope; the tension finally relieved, but too sharply, so the pane jerked upward, loosening the main knot. If the hinges had turned smoothly, she would have finished in seconds. Instead, the knot gave way, and the panel swung aside. Sunlight cut through, splashing color over the marble floor in the shape of an unfamiliar compass.
The moving picture drew a quiet crowd; even the head librarian paused beside the returns desk. Sienna noticed that the unexpected map aligned perfectly with the children’s reading circle. If the knot had held, she might never have seen the hidden design. She rotated the panel, asked a passerby to hold the rope, and fitted new clips around the iron hooks. Glass settled, screws tightened, and light streamed once more, painting the compass exactly where cushions waited. Light pooled across the mosaic floor.
