A low veil of mist hovered above the water, hiding everything beyond the first line of waves. A gull wheeled overhead, its cry clipped short as a new gale rolled in from the open sea. Wind rattled loose pebbles, slapped strands of hair across her cheeks, and pressed her jacket flat against her ribs.

She unfolded the tripod, yet one leg refused to lock. A stronger gust shoved the shaky frame sideways, tipping her spare lens into a shallow puddle. Water rippled outward, darkening the sand. She crouched, retrieving the lens with both palms braced. Salt droplets clung to the glass like scattered beads; a quick sleeve rub cleared them. While she straightened, the mist thinned without warning. Its slow drift began to reveal an unexpected shape farther along the ledge: a stone arch arcing out toward the tide, previously hidden behind the pale plume of spray thrown up by each crashing breaker. Sunlight slid through the newly opened gap, striking the arch and painting a honeyed stripe across the restless surface below.

Leona swung the tripod toward the scene, sheeted the wobbling leg with a spare strap, and framed the arch just as three puffins burst from beneath it. They curved upward, one after another, then plunged together in a synchronized dive that sent silver droplets flying. Click after click, her shutter captured the sequence while wind and water rearranged the shoreline theater. A final booming wave hurled foam across her boots, but the rig stayed firm this time, stitched tight by her makeshift fix. When the birds vanished again beneath the churning blue, she lowered the camera, breath clouding faintly in the cooling air. Spray settled along the stone ledge.
