English 原文
Morning light filtered through the station’s vaulted roof, its diaphanous glass turning each breath of dust into soft haze. Avery paused near a pillar, sketchbook balanced on one knee. She aimed to capture the intricate lace of iron ribs overhead before commuters blurred the scene. Trains hissed, doors chimed, and footsteps overlapped in uneven percussion. A lingering draft twisted the first sheet of paper, teasing graphite lines into wavering shadows; her fingers steadied the page, yet the current persisted, hinting that the roof vents stood open for spring.
The crowd thickened without warning. A suitcase clipped Avery’s ankle; her charcoal slipped and rolled across the tiles. She crouched, hand darting between moving shoes, but the slender stick slid farther, nudged by a well–polished heel. As she adjusted her angle, the sketchbook tilted, and loose pages scattered, fluttering like pale moths above the floor’s granite grid. A postcard swirled away from her reach, arrested only when a tall passenger planted a boot on its corner. He bent, offering the card with a nod before stepping aside, allowing her space to gather the stray sheets.
While stacking the papers, Avery noticed something unfamiliar: a small shell, smooth and hinged, lodged between two drawings. Its surface reflected the vaulted ceiling in miniature. She pried it open; a tiny pearl rested inside, cool against her palm. Serendipity emerged inside the station’s routine roar, embodied by this quiet fragment of ocean life far from any shore. The stranger returned, kneeling to retrieve her charcoal. Their shoulders brushed; both stared at the shell, then at each other, wordless yet alert to the oddness of the find. Nearby travelers slowed, curiosity tugging at their path, forming an eddy around the pair while the larger current of commuters continued beyond.
Avery set the shell on her sketchbook, rose, and crossed toward the information counter. The tall passenger matched her pace, carrying the scattered pages. Behind them, footsteps resumed a steady rhythm; the brief circle of attention loosened and merged back into ordinary flow. Sunlight shifted across the floor, brightening one wide stripe of stone and dimming another. The tiny pearl rested on the polished counter under a fading band of light.
