English 原文
The first bell from the harbor clock rolled through the dim streets as Leo slipped into the bakery. Heat still lingered near the ovens, yet flour already floated downward like light snow. At the back, a narrow pantry waited behind swinging doors. He nudged past sacks of grain and lifted a slim wooden case from the top shelf; inside, rare pigments would travel to the painter at the old lighthouse. He balanced the case on his palm, picturing the blank wall that would soon bloom under the new palette, then stepped outside where gulls traced low arcs above the pier.
Morning traffic formed its own slow river. Carts laden with nets creaked toward the market; cyclists threaded around crates; hoses hissed across the paving stones. Leo pushed his bicycle forward, but the leather strap securing the case snagged on the metal frame. The wheel nudged his ankle, nearly toppling him. He crouched, eased the buckle, and tightened it again. Water slapped against stone blocks below the walkway, rising bit by bit—high tide always blocked the causeway after the fourth bell. He mounted, pedaled hard, and wove through the moving patchwork of people, wheels, and fluttering canvas.
Halfway to the lighthouse, the strap slipped once more. Leo pulled over beside an iron lamppost and unclasped the lid to check the hinge. Instead of neat rows of pigment jars, he found interlocking wooden pieces shaped like a curling seahorse. A hidden catch must have shifted during the ride. To reach the colors, he needed to decode the puzzle. He sat on the low sea wall; wind tugged his hair while waves tapped below. Fingers pressed, twisted, and slid the tiny scales. Clicks echoed in unison with distant ship bells until the last segment rotated free, revealing the sealed vials beneath. He exhaled, slid the pieces back, and secured the latch properly this time.
The final approach rose above dark water now pushing through the arches under the causeway. Leo lifted the bicycle, hurried across the short ramp, and reached the lighthouse courtyard just as the fifth bell began. Inside the round studio, canvases leaned against stone, and jars of sand-filtered water shimmered on a window sill. He placed the opened case on a stool; sunlight streamed through the tall panes, scattering color across the floorboards. Outside, oars rested against the quiet pier.
