In the earliest light, Kai, a quiet insect enthusiast, crossed the wooden footbridge toward the community garden. A backpack bounced against his shoulders, and an old camera swung from his neck. Morning dew traced silver lines along the rails. He had spent weeks studying field guides, convinced the silver-blue swallowtail visited the garden after rain. The night storm left the air cool and the soil lush, and plentiful raindrops still clung to every leaf. At the gate, freshly painted boards had been propped open by a stone. The path had been cleared by volunteers. Kai set a careful pace, scanning each stem for movement.

A faint flick caught his eye. A feral cat burst from the bushes and scattered the butterflies. Kai steadied the lens, but the battery icon flashed red, then the display faded. If he had remembered the spare cell, the first shot would have succeeded. He inhaled through tight lips, removed the battery, and warmed it between his palms. Nothing changed. Searching for another tool, he noticed an abandoned pocket radio. Its long antenna glinted beside a bench. He tilted it toward the sunlight. The metal surface threw soft beams across the marigolds, and fresh wings drifted into the open.

One silver-blue visitor floated over the beams, hovered, and settled on the cool radio case. Kai raised the powerless camera, then a grin bent his cheeks. He reached into the backpack, produced an unused phone, and nudged the cracked screen awake. The cat crept closer again, but a sudden clap from the gardeners sent it away. Quick fingers framed the picture; yet the insect lifted just as he pressed capture. Unexpectedly, it landed on the camera strap itself and stayed motionless. The phone clicked three times before the wings rose toward the sky. The camera rested on the grass, its tiny screen glowing.
