Dawn crept over the city botanical garden, coating glass roofs with faint bronze. Mira had entered the annual wildlife photography competition and needed one unforgettable frame. Rumour claimed a xenops sometimes searched for insects near the orchid greenhouse, so she aimed there first. The structure, once a prison for quarantined moths, still held narrow iron walkways that echoed under her boots. A stubborn latch resisted her entry; the rusty hook refused to lift until she pressed with both thumbs, losing precious minutes.

Rain began unexpectedly, turning smooth paths into shining ribbons and forcing Mira beneath a broad-leafed fig that offered refuge. Water drummed on her hood, and steamed lenses worsened the hardship because distant branches blurred into colourless streaks. She wiped the glass with a scarf, adjusted shutter speed, then crept along the railings, yet the xenops stayed hidden. A sudden flutter near the roof vents raised her expectation; however, the camera battery expired before she focused. If the battery had lasted longer, she would have captured that first opportunity without trouble.

Mira hurried back, found a caretaker replacing orchid labels, and exchanged a pack of spare screws for his charged battery. Returning, she discovered the rain had softened; droplets slid from leaves like tiny mirrors signalling calm. She crouched beside a mossy bench, scattered several beetle larvae, and remained motionless while minutes slipped past. The xenops finally darted down, clung upside-down on her backpack strap, and hammered the fabric as if probing bark. Soft light rested on the crisp image blinking across her camera screen.
