Milo had arrived at dawn, camera swinging against his backpack. He has visited this coastal area every summer. Today his plan stood clear: capture a bright image of tiny creatures living between waves. A narrow lighthouse stair curved beside him, its metal handrail damp. Instead of climbing, he stepped onto the dark rocks along the shoreline. Wind pushed salt spray toward his face, and slick algae slowed his boots. Ahead, a wide tide pool reflected gray clouds. Seafoam was blown across the viewfinder, hiding the small crabs that darted under pebbles. Milo wiped the glass, yet the screen stayed dark. He glanced upward; the spiral stair, which had looked ordinary earlier, now stood as another chance. He ran up, two steps at once, until a round window faced the pool below. From that height, he could rest the silent camera on the sill and use his phone instead. The higher angle revealed a pattern of shells forming a perfect star. This discovery has been hidden by the rocks before. He tapped the screen, and a clear image appeared while waves settled around the pool’s edge.
