Steam curled over the kitchen stove as Grandmother lifted a pot of soup. She has already sliced onions, but the carrot bowl stood empty. Paulo grabbed a shallow basket that was hanging beside the door. He aimed to fetch fresh carrots from the garden yard before the soup started to bubble too hard. Outside, grey clouds rolled low. Wind flipped the edge of his raincoat, and the first cold drops tapped his hood. A neighbor strolled toward the gate, offering a supportive wave, yet the sky rumbled louder. Paulo hurried across wet grass, boots spraying small arcs of water.

Rows of green tops swayed, yet something blocked the row. The neighbor's small dog, that often napped near the shed, stood over the carrot patch, nose deep in soil. Rain thickened, tapping louder. Paulo crouched and whistled, but the dog refused to budge, paws planted like stones. Lightning flashed behind clouds; the yard grew brighter for a breath. Paulo adjusted: he reached for a handful of turnips at the edge, where the dog paid no attention. Basket half-filled, he dashed back inside. The surprise waited on the windowsill: clean carrots had been washed and stacked by the supportive neighbor. Grandmother laughed, lifted the turnips into the pot, and steam rose steady over the stove.

綠葉成行搖曳，卻有東西擋住那一列。經常在工具棚旁午睡的鄰居小狗站在胡蘿蔔區上，鼻子埋進泥土。雨勢轉大，敲擊聲更密。保羅蹲下吹口哨，狗依舊紋風不動，爪子像石頭般埋在地面。雲後閃電一劃，院子在瞬間亮了起來。保羅改變策略，伸手在邊緣抓起一把蕪菁，那裡狗毫不在意。籃子半滿，他衝回屋內。窗檯上有驚喜：鄰居已洗好胡蘿蔔並整齊堆放。祖母笑著把蕪菁投入鍋中，爐火上蒸氣再次安穩升起。
