Weak light from a small bulb colored scattered parcels yellow.
A tall stack of books blocked the wooden trunk nearby.
He pushed one book, and the stack tilted dangerously sideways.
The top book slid, struck a paintbox, and pencils rolled.
Rolling pencils bumped a tin can that rattled against the wall.
The rattling jar startled a resting pigeon above the beam.
Flapping wings shook dust onto Milo’s hair and shoulders.
Coughing, he stepped back just as the trunk creaked open.
A wrapped canvas slid out and landed safely on cloth.
Milo unwrapped it and revealed a bright summer landscape.
Brushstrokes showed careful work from a skilled artist long ago.
At that moment, noon light from the roof window strengthened.
The sun hung near zenith, sending stronger beams across paint.
