Maya balanced a wooden cart that her brother had painted green at the market gate. Every year neighbours have carried these cakes to the riverside stage. The walk is a tradition that began before her grandmother was born. Maya has never missed the lively walk before. Today, however, festival drums had already started, and the road ahead was packed. Umbrellas tilted, and wet air thickened the atmosphere above shining stalls. Several lanterns had been hung between doorways and swung gently above the crowd. She edged forward, yet children danced across her wheels, forcing a pause. Searching for space, she turned into a side alley. The cart bounced over stones and suddenly halted. A deep furrow firmly caught the front wheel. Cool water sprayed onto her trousers and stopped progress completely.

Maya knelt beside the wheel and tried lifting the cart, but wet mud refused to release it. She searched for a stone to wedge under the rim. A tiny paper lantern floated inside the furrow. Its painted fish were bobbing in the puddle, still unlit. A boy in festival clothes hurried near, scanning the ground with wide eyes. Without speaking, Maya passed the lantern to him; he flicked a switch, and soft light glowed. He raised his eyebrows, a grin spreading across his face. He placed the lantern on her cart, and both hands gripped the frame. Two other children joined, and soon three small backs heaved together. The wheel rose, water streamed away, and the cart rolled free. They reached the square while drums echoed around the riverbank. Steam from noodles carried warmth through the air, and shared laughter drifted around the mooncakes on the table.
