Leo crouched on the wooden pier just after dawn, clutching a waterproof camera and a plastic measuring rod. He had spent the whole week preparing, because his science report compared the colour of seagrass to the water’s wavelength. If he had checked the tide chart, he would have noticed the schedule of the small lagoon better. Instead, an intense current drifted beneath the boards, stirring sand across the seabed and turning the clear water cloudy. A salty breeze pressed against his cheeks, carrying the low rhythm of distant gulls. He lowered the rod anyway; green lines painted along its edge were soon hidden by floating grit. A dark urchin slid from a crack and knocked the rod sideways, forcing Leo to snatch it back.

Undeterred, Leo attached a small weight to the camera strap, hoping the device would settle long enough for a sharp picture. He released it, yet the intense current returned, spinning the strap until a miniature whirlpool circled the lens. The image on the screen quickly blurred, then disappeared beneath swirling sand again. He had been watched by his older sister Mira, who leaned over the railing and grinned at his struggle. Without speaking, she lowered a bright metal baking tray, letting sunlight bounce from its surface toward the clouded water. The reflected light startled a school of silver fry, and their sudden darting cleared the sand just long enough.

Leo clicked the shutter; the camera captured the moment, seagrass waving like green ribbons across the restored seabed. A faint cheer drifted from a distant boat, then faded back into the morning hush. Seaweed brushed the posts below, tapping gently like slow percussion against timber. Ribbon shapes later revealed precise differences in colour, so his table of wavelength values was finally complete. Gentle ripples rested against the pale sand beside the pier, and the tray gleamed quietly above them.
