English 原文
Dario left the tram while the awakening city still stretched and yawned. Glass on opposite towers caught the first rays, turning the narrow street between them into a bright canyon. He wanted a quick sketch of that fleeting light before traffic thickened. A barrier of orange cones fenced off a long trench where workers had removed paving stones, but a plywood plank bridged the gap, so he stepped across and settled near a stack of empty cable spools.
He unfolded a stool and opened his pad; a restless breeze flipped the pages backward, slapping paper against his knuckles. When he pressed them flat, his pencil slipped, rolled along the plank, and stopped at the edge. He crouched, pinched it, and straightened again, only to feel his broad-brimmed hat tug away. The wind gained force, and the hat spun like a slow wheel before a sharp plunge carried it down into the trench, where it landed upside-down among gravel.
Retrieving the hat seemed awkward from above, so he climbed the plywood, lowering one boot into a metal rung that protruded from the wall. A short ladder led him to the bottom, where diesel scent mingled with damp earth. When he lifted the hat, he noticed sunlight striking a polished water pipe that snaked along the ground. The pipe reflected a clean band of brightness onto the trench’s inner wall, forming a pale rectangle—perfect for perspective practice. He forgot the vanished view overhead and began sketching the unexpected shapes instead, tracing how the rectangle narrowed toward a drainage opening.
Traffic sounds eventually rose beyond the rim, and a crane’s engine idled nearby, yet the trench stayed relatively calm. He finished one drawing, shook dust from the hat, and climbed out just as the plank wobbled under a passing wheelbarrow. Back on the sidewalk, he flipped to a fresh sheet and added a final note of contrast from the rim before closing the pad. The fresh lines rested across his second page.
