English 原文
Late afternoon sunlight slanted through the workshop roof, throwing pale stripes over a vintage emerald-green coupe. Dust floated like sleepy snowflakes, settling on the workbench and the thin oil film along the floor. Nora stepped carefully inside with a narrow box tucked under one arm. She planned to fit the brand-new radio into the car before her grandfather arrived for supper. The coupe’s paint still shone, yet the interior looked more like a skeleton, panels missing and wires exposed from previous attempts. Inside, the original mounting bracket had been welded by an impatient mechanic decades earlier. Her toolkit felt minimal beside the wide dashboard, yet she rolled up her sleeves and pried open the ashtray slot. A brittle screw snapped at once, and a loose wire hissed, forcing her hand back.
Wire had been scarce in the storeroom, so Nora patiently examined the walls for anything reusable. A narrow niche beneath a cracked window held an old bicycle bell; its slender bolt matched the broken screw. She extracted it carefully, though the bell clanged against the sill and sent dust clouding around her shoes. Returning to the coupe, she threaded the bolt through the radio bracket. The unit still refused to settle, and the bracket tilted every time she tightened it. If she had remembered extra washers, the task would have smoothed out quickly. Instead, she clipped thin cardboard circles from a cereal box into neat rings.
The improvised washers balanced the bracket at last, and the radio slid into place. When Nora reconnected the power, faint orange letters brightened across the dashboard. A voice burst from the speaker, singing the opening bars of her grandfather’s first recorded song from decades earlier. Her hand jerked, and she nearly dropped the faceplate onto the metal floor. She adjusted the dial, but the station held steady, echoing through the silent workshop. The completed interior no longer resembled loose bones; panels closed, wires tucked, and polished knobs caught the sinking light. A soft amber glow rested across the polished dashboard and lingered over the silent steering wheel.
