English 原文
Lena knelt beside the trench as early light reached the tarps over the field site. The young archeologist aimed to unearth a rumored clay whistle that local farmers mentioned last season. She had already marked a square where a faint ring of darker soil outlined possible debris. Her first trowel stroke met stone and bounced, scattering chips over her boots. Pebbles clogged the blade, slowing progress. She swapped the trowel for a finer brush, yet the compact sand refused to loosen. Every movement stirred only a dull cloud, while minutes slipped away. The approaching team would inevitably claim the area if she failed to uncover evidence.
A sudden drizzle tapped the plastic roof, and muddy drops slid into the trench, turning the sand to paste. Water seeped around Lena’s knees, forcing her to pause as the floor threatened to collapse inward. She hurried to place wooden planks across the rim, but the surface kept sagging. If she had ignored the faint shine under the water, the whistle would have remained buried. Instead, she lowered a small sieve and scooped a mixture of grains, shells, and something heavier. The flow rinsed lighter pieces away, revealing a metallic cylinder no longer than her thumb. Variety in color—green, bronze, silver—flecked its sides like scales on a fish.
Rain faded, and sun returned, steaming the trench. The morning bustle rose as crates were pushed toward the larger excavation mound, yet few eyes noticed Lena’s quiet triumph. The object had been sealed with earth for centuries, yet a soft breath escaped when she cleaned its mouthpiece against her sleeve; the note hovered like a bird startled into flight. Echoes raced along empty buckets, drawing surprised glances. Soil that once hid the whistle now lay drying in rippled bands around the pit. The small cylinder rested on her palm, glinting steadily in the new light.
