Liam woke early in the small mountain cabin. He wanted to explore the wide glacier before noon. To start quickly, he packed bread, water, and a notebook. A metal cup slipped from the shelf and hit his pack. The bag rolled, bumped the table, and shook the lantern. The lantern fell, its glass tapped a loose floorboard. The board lifted slightly, showing a narrow dark space.

Curious, Liam kneeled and reached into the gap. His fingers closed around a tiny wooden box. Inside the box lay a silver compass still shining. Words inside showed hidden paths beside the ice cliffs. Liam smiled, placed the compass in his pocket, and stood. The lantern stayed upright now, light shining over the floor. He closed the cabin door and walked toward the bright glacier. Snow crunched under his boots as new lines crossed his notebook. Wind carried the cold air while Liam followed the compass. Steps faded into white distance, leaving the door quiet behind.
