Mira stepped onto the firm sand after the tide fell, scanning the shoreline for thin, dry driftwood. The science fair model in her backpack had been planned carefully; a small boat would float on a classroom tank tomorrow. Last night a bold outline had been drawn, and every measurement was already saved on the tablet balanced against her hip. Waves deposited curved branches at random, so she paced between foamy lines, collecting the straightest fragments. Salt water clung to her sleeves, but she kept stacking the pieces until her arms sagged. When a final branch rolled toward her boots, she crouched and secured it under one elbow before turning homeward.

On the path back, the scattered bundle slipped twice, and sand scratched her wrists. She pushed the pieces into a discarded corrugated box resting beside a recycle station, yet its damp corner folded inward, spilling half the load onto the pavement. She jabbed holes through the flaps with a pen, threaded twine, and tightened a loose knot; the box now held the cargo, although water darkened its bottom. At home, she cleared space at her basement workstation. Glue, string, and other paraphernalia covered the table, while a humming desktop framed the plan on screen. The mouse, her usual input device, stuck to a drop of resin and dragged sluggishly across the pad, slowing every adjustment to the digital drawing.

Two attempts to fit the longest plank as a keel ended in wobbling angles; each misaligned edge splintered when pressure rose. She exhaled through tightened lips, trimmed fresh slots, and slid shorter timber into place. If the box had stayed dry, she would have reached this stage earlier, yet perseverance replaced the lost minutes. While searching for another clamp, she noticed a slender branch poking from the box’s torn corner, its curve identical to the outline of a sail. A quick cut freed it, and the entire frame balanced at once, as though the missing answer had waited inside the mess. The tiny boat rested on the silent windowsill.

她兩度嘗試把最長木片當龍骨，卻因角度晃動而斷裂。她擠緊雙唇吐氣，重新削凹槽，換較短木片嵌入。如果紙箱乾爽，她早就進入這一步，但堅持補回失去的時間。她搜尋另一個夾具時，瞄到紙箱破角伸出的一枝纖細木條，弧度剛好匹配船帆輪廓。一剪刀割下，整個船架瞬間平衡，好像答案一直躲在混亂中。小船靜靜地停在窗台上。
