English 原文
Milo rolled a squeaking trolley of stage props toward the warehouse’s freight lift, aiming to clear the corridor before noon crowds reached the loading bay. A paper lantern slid from the top crate, and he caught it against his chest, shoulders tightening as the thin bamboo ribs bent. The shut metal grate ahead rested at a slanted angle; years of minor impacts had shifted the alignment between its frame and the guiding rails. He knelt, brushed away grit, and jerked the lower panel until the rollers snapped into place.
The outer door lifted halfway, then stopped. Milo pressed his palms under the edge and pushed again. Nothing. A closer look showed rust blooming around the sealing mechanism that linked the grate to the inner cage. He tapped the corroded bar; flakes fell, exposing a narrow gap. Behind it, the retaining bolt system shimmered with a thin line of fresh grease—someone had serviced this relic recently. Most bolts sat tight, yet one retaining bolt near the floor wobbled. Milo tugged it with two fingers. It slid free, clinked onto the concrete, and the grate finally rose.
As the cage door opened, stale air drifted up the shaft. No platform waited—just darkness stretching downward. Milo frowned, shifted weight from one foot to the other, and traced the lift cable with a flashlight. The car stood one level below, already brimming with unexpected cargo: a carnival dragon of lacquered paper lay coiled inside, scales glittering in dusty light. In the aftermath of that discovery, Milo’s eyebrows lifted high, knocking his cap backward. A soft creak sounded overhead; the counterweight shuddered. He stepped back quickly, hands splayed, and the dragon’s snout poked through the bars as the car rose on its own, halted, and bumped against the landing, scattering confetti trapped inside the folds.
Colorful shreds fluttered around Milo’s boots before settling. He steadied the trolley, slid the lantern back into place, and guided the props into the now-vacant space beside the dragon’s tail. Confetti swirled, then drifted to the corners while the lift door eased shut on fresh tracks. Dust hung above the quiet shaft.
